Things We Left Broken

Things We Left Broken

I couldn’t trust myself
– the greatest of betrayals.

No longer seeing value
in what lay ahead.
My eyes slowly shut
out this world,

another calling.

I have never been fond
of goodbyes.
Building a bridge too many
with mismatches
and unrequited love.

Flames lit
in the silence
between words unspoken.

Bones unmoved
by the sound of music.
Hearts untouched
by the words of poetry.

Things, I discovered,
don’t fall apart anymore.
They grow,
in different directions,
yet still stay rooted
to the same waters.

No longer mindful
of the things we leave broken.

I will never be fond
of goodbyes.

I never got the chance
to say goodbye to my father.
