Day 4 – List 10 things you would tell your 16 year-old self, if you could.
At 16 years old, the world was my oyster. I still harbored dreams of doing a major course in campus and making it in life. A decade plus later, life has taught me a lot and there are a few things I wish I knew at 16.
1. Failure is not defeat
Dear 16 year old me, you’ll succeed at some things and you will fail at others. Please not that failure is not a setback but an opportunity to learn. Don’t be afraid to take more risks just because you had a small hiccup.
2. Don’t give up on your art
At the moment I am struggling to do all the artistic things I used to enjoy. I can’t remember the last time I took to a stage to perform a poem, sing or take part in a play. Please don’t give up on your art.
3. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
4. Trusting people is not a weakness
Yes, people will let you down and stab you in the back. Not everyone you meet will do that to you. Trust the right people and choose your friends wisely.
5. It’s never too late for a second chance
Don’t deny yourself the opportunity to start over.
6. Love yours
J. Cole hasn’t made it into your life yet but if there’s one thing you will learn from his music – love yours.
7. Learn to forgive and find peace with yourself.
8. Never stop wanting to learn something new.
9. Take risks.
10. Save and invest.
Proper financial planning will get you far in life.
